The Wyoming city of Rock Springs, with a population bordering on 23,000, lies in Sweetwater County and is the home of Sweetwater Downs racetrack. The city is remembered for the Rock Springs Massacre on 2nd September 1885 when Chinese people in the region were killed by white miners, for little other reason than being Chinese. In these more enlightened times the city is known for Wyomings Big Show, an annual extravaganza which celebrates the multi-cultural heritage (over 56 Nationalities live in the area) of the city. The 4 furlong oval track, with separate chute and grandstand, offers a programme of quarter horse racing, with some thoroughbred races occasionally joining the mix. The track closed in 1994, but returned 17 years later in 2011, and today it hosts 9 race days spread across 3 weekends. From Friday to Sunday on the first two weekends there are quarter horse trial races, while the final weekend sees a range of finals culminating in the Western States Breeders Futurity.
